In 1996, Wangerin and coworkers introduced two updated intraoral bone-borne devices for mandibular lengthening based on the anatomic location of distraction site - horizontal corpus or ascending ramus (Wangerin et al., 1996).The Horizontal Mandibular Distraction Device consists of a square-shaped cylinder (20 mm or 25 mm long) with two miniplates (L- and T-shaped) on both ends of the appliance. After bending these plates to the contour of the bone surface, the device is fixed to the mandible by 2.0 mm diameter monocortical screws.
