In 1994, McCarthy and coworkers developed a miniaturized bone-borne Uniguide Mandibular Distraction Device suitable for intraoral placement (McCarthy et al., 1994). Similar to his extraoral appliance, the device consisted of two clamps that were attached to the bone via pairs of pins connected by a telescopic distraction rod.
