Hidding, Lazar, and Zoller from Germany developed the Vertical Distractor for alveolar ridge augmentation. The device consists of a 10 mm or 15 mm vertical distractor connected to two pairs of mini plates for monocortical screw fixation. Each full turn of the distraction rod produces 0.5 mm of alveolar height increase.
Hidding and his group used vertical distraction osteogenesis on 10 patients with edentulous mandibles due to segmental tumor resection or trauma (Hidding et al., 1998). Following Ilizarov's protocol (7 day latency, distraction 0.5 mm 2x /day, 2 months consolidation), successful results were achieved in all cases.
