Preoperative Planning

Each patient, and therefore, each ROD appliance, has individual clinical requirements determined by careful examination of preoperative data. Model, cephalometric and panoramic radiograph analysis, and in some cases, CT scans and MRI studies, are collected and processed to determine the type and location of osteotomy, appropriate device selection, and planned vector of distraction. Specific cases require presurgical orthodontic treatment to open interradicular space for interdental osteotomies. Adequate to slightly increased interradicular space will ensure intramembranous bone formation during osteodistraction and preserve adequate alveolar bone and periodontal ligament on either side of the osteotomy. Three-dimensional stereolithographic models may be required for precise preoperative planning of the osteotomy and device orientation.
